A set of Japanese tsuge(boxwood)combs with delicate cuts, ca 1950, never been used. The combs made out of tsuge wood has been known to be gentle on the hair and scalp without causing static. They were treasured by the women and men for many, many centuries. For maintenance of the combs, camellia (tsubaki) oil has been used but good vegetable oil should work as well. The color of tsuge deepens as they were used from the camellia oil and natural oil from our hair. There are still enough people today who look only for tsuge combs. When we purchased this set in Kyoto, we were told that they were made in 1950. Beautiful hand work.
The dimensions of the combs and pin from left to right (on photo #1) are 3 7/8”L x 1 5/8”W, 5 5/8”L, 4 1/2”L, 5 3/4”L, 5”L.
