Unsigned, 19th century
Diameter: 1 1/8 in. (2.9 cm.)
A kagamibuta comprising a tarnished silver plaque inlaid with gold, set in a bamboo bowl with a himotoshi lined with stained stag antler. The metal plaque is decorated with an old man holding a scroll and seated beneath a pine tree. The long forehead of the wise man would suggest Fukurukuju, the gold of longevity. However, the scroll and pine tree would suggest the Sennin Ukaku, who is usually depicted with a scroll inscribed “Under the shadow of the pine and the plum-tree, sleeping on a high rock, Unkaku knows not how run the years; there is no calendar in the mountains.”
Condition: A crack to the bamboo bowl, otherwise excellent.
