Fun dynamic carving of an immortal surprised by a rat in his bag.
The figure has well carved robe folds, facial features, bag and even the rat’s face. The immortal’s arms are lifted in surprise and his face has a surprised look. There is so much life to this statue.
The yellow-colored soapstone has the soft smooth feel of marble. It has oxidized over time and no longer feels soapy. The veining and mottling in the stone gives it a very rich character.
The figure may have had a darker wash rubbed in. The base is flat and has had a black stained wood stand made especially for it. The stand shows considerable age, which helps date the carving, as well.
There are some scratch marks underneath. A number 1050 and what maybe a Chinese character.
4 ¾” (12 cm) long x 2 3/8” (6.1 cm) wide x 3” (7.6 cm) tall. Weight 12.1 oz (345 g)
I could find no chips, breaks, or cracks. The stone has a worn soft feel.
A small statue with such good carving and a nice worn soft look and color. Much movement and humor.
