An early Qing porcelain plate with a nice pale blue cobalt that was thinly potted.

A round thinly hand potted porcelain plate with a steep rise to a wide rim. The glaze has a definite blue cast and is decorated in a pale blue cobalt with dark explosions. The glaze is thick and so very smooth feeling, with a nice shine. The design is floral sprays around a central flower. There is a cobalt line at the rim with two floral sprays on the back. I feel this plate was more for the Chinese market rather than for export because there are no border bands.

The plate has a cut unglazed foot and a glazed base. There is a small inventory label with the numbers 1996.6.2 on the base from the Portland Art Museum in Portland Oregon. The plate was part of their collection and was deaccessioned.

8 ¾” diameter x 1” tall. Weighs 13.0 oz (375 g)

There are rim frits on the thin mouth edge. There are no cracks or breaks and it rings like a bell. There are kiln flaws such as pimples, reserves, and black spots. There is wear to the central well, particularly one larger spot near the edge of the center.

A large decorative early piece of blue and white, with a soft shade of blue that will show off well in your décor.
