Deeply carved, nice dark red lacquer cinnabar vase that has elaborate scenes of mountains, gardens, trees and scholars. The carving is very minute and exact. The willow trees have such well carved leaves. The mouth, neck, lower body, and base are carved with repeating patterns of ruyi, lappets, peony scrolls, and key fret bands. The interior and base are covered in a black lacquer.
The vase is light weight with a metal rim. The lacquer is thick and has been carved very deeply. The base is black and has a metal foot ring. The color of lacquer is a nice deep red. The vase is a pleasing classic baluster shape with good proportions.
The mark ""CHINA"" is carved in the black base lacquer.
10” (25.4 cm) tall x 5” (12.7 cm) diameter. Weighs 15.0 oz (425 g)
There is a dent and consequent lacquer damage at the mouth. There are small lacquer losses around the mouth of the vase. There is a dent in the metal foot ring and consequent lacquer loss around the foot. The body is in very good shape with no losses.
An old classic lacquer vase with good color and carving. With the delicacy, I'm amazed it has lasted this long. A colorful work of Chinese art.
