Fine and elaborate gilt patterns of lotus, vines, artemisia leaves, bats, double shou symbols, flower baskets and elaborate border patterns have been painted over the base blue glaze. The gold shows well against the dark blue glaze. The domed lid matches the gold paintings on the jar. The lid’s bottom edge also has a key fret design. The lid is topped with a painted wood finial.
The outer mouth and the foot ring are not glazed, but the base is glazed. The jar shows excellent control of the glaze. The base is marked with double cobalt ring. The shallow foot is slightly rounded. Potter’s wheel marks are visible on the unglazed areas and the clay is a nice light off white. The interior lid and jar are glazed in a thick blue tinged white glaze. The edge of the lid is unglazed.
The glaze feels very smooth to the touch, and the jar has a nice weight to it.
