A lovely 9 ½” tall carving of Guan Yin with much detailed work. The dynamic flow and movement of her garments is suggested by the elaborate carving.
The carving of a Guan Yin resting on lotus leaves with lotus pods peeking out, was carved from a dark reddish, tight grained, heavy wood. Curled waves lick at her feet and she cradles a ruyi scepter. Buddhist beads around her neck and in her hand are deeply carved. The finish is soft and slightly shiny.
There is the remnant of an early paper label on the base.
9 ½” (24.1 cm) tall x 4 ¼” (10.8 cm) wide x 4” (10.2 cm) deep. Weighs 1 lb 7.4 oz (665 g)
There is a small, shallow hairline crack on the back shoulder. The left side of the carving has slightly lighter color. This might be due to sun bleaching that side.
An elaborate expert carving with movement and grace.
