Colorful and nicely decorated metal tea caddy with an interesting shape. It is both utilitarian and highly decorative. This tea caddy intended for the Chinese market rather than export. Heavy metal alloy tea caddy with a lobed body and high neck.
The lid, which covers the entire length of the neck, fits securely. The outside of the caddy has a gold colored patina with a nice slick, smooth feel. The characters have been painted in a lighter and darker color on the lid top and main body panels. One end panel shows ducks and lotus and the other shows a songbird and rose. The body of the caddy rests on 4 raised feet. The base does not have a patina. There is a 4 character mark stamped on the base with a hand written character in black painted on it.
6 7/8” (17.5 cm) tall x 4 ½” (11.4 cm) deep x 3 3/8” (8.6 cm) wide.
Weighs 1 lb 4.9 oz (595 g)
There are some small dents to the lid top edge, and dent on the songbird panel. There are wear marks to the body and gilt loss on edges. It still looks very good.
A substantial useful and well used tea caddy that has a nice heft. The color and design make it more than a utilitarian object; definitely Chinese taste.
