From our European Collection, a very fine Federal Giltwood Pier Mirror, early 19th century circa 1800-1820, featuring a looking glass surmounted by a good maritime scene, bordered on top by a pair of angels exquisitely rendered in gilded gesso suspended beneath an overhanging cornice, and flanked by gilded ribboned columns on the sides.
This particular mirror is an excellent example of its kind, and is especially well-preserved. The gilding is all original yet still very rich and lively, with only some minor expected flaking and crazing here and there with no major losses to speak of. The "biggest" loss is a 7/8 inch flake of gilding missing on the lower right side on the flank, but overall condition is quite excellent. We believe this example is probably English due to the British-flagged sailing ships depicted in the maritime scene (look at the close-ups to see the flags), but it's also possible this is Early American.
34 1/2 inches tall, 18 1/2 inches wide.
