Circle of Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) Portrait of a Gentleman
Size and Condition: Framed dimensions approximately 40 inches tall by 35 inches wide, unframed image size is 30.5 x 25.5 inches. There is obvious and fairly extensive flaking to the gilded wood and gesso frame, notably along the bottom and right edge as seen in the photos. This could theoretically be re-gilded or painted over quite easily, HOWEVER, we believe this to be an original period frame, and probably THE frame original to this piece, so we would actually caution against over-painting or restoring the frame. The subsequent purchaser may certainly exercise his or her own judgment and taste, but for us, we recognize the charm (and inherent monetary value) in old original period frames, and generally don't recommend restoration or remediation to them unless they are no longer serviceable in their current condition. Here however, the frame itself is quite solid, heavy, durable and fully functional, it is merely only some surface level gilded gesso flaking one is actually looking at. As for the canvas itself, it is in very good order, no tears or punctures.
