From our Indian Subcontinent Collection, a superbly carved sandalwood buddha from the city of Jasailmer in the Rajasthan region of India. This buddha sits in padmasana (interlocking lotus position) upon a double lotus base while displaying vitarka mudra with the right hand, and holding what is probably a kalasa pot in the left hand.

When we travel to collect pieces, we shop with a very discerning eye. There is a vast multitude of shlocky handicrafts around that no doubt, please the casual tourists just looking for souvenirs. But as art collectors we are always looking out for the best examples of a particular medium. This particular sculpture, while unassuming, is actually an excellent piece of workmanship. The carving is very crisp, and the sculptor has captured well the aura of the buddha. In addition, with genuine sandalwood becoming increasingly scarce and expensive, the latest con for the unwary tourist is to be sold carvings on non-aromatic imitations of sandalwood that have merely been scented with sandalwood oil....But this piece is guaranteed to be genuine sandalwood, and has never been - nor ever needs to be - “tarted up” with any oils. Connoisseurs can tell the difference anyway. Also, this is carved on a relatively large single piece of sandalwood (less common), and is thus not a carving that has been pieced together with several smaller pieces of wood.

Size and condition: 12 inches tall, 5 1/2 inches wide, 2 1/2 inches deep. Perfect condition.
