Guest Book

A remarkable chawan (tea bowl) by Koie Ryoji, one of the best known contemporary Japanese potters.

This particular bowl is made in the Oribe style of pottery, a tradition that has kept its avant-garde traits for four hundred years. Here, the play of colors from the skilful use of glaze creates a wonderful keishiki (landscape). The yamakizu (kiln flaw), visible on pictures 4 and 6 is a welcome feature, a spectacular crevasse on a miniature “paysage”, in the classic Chinese sense of aesthetics.

Koie Ryoji, born in 1938 in Tokoname, is a true artist who finds inspiration in anything, and his creations are expressions of his will to constantly redefine his work and surprise the viewers. Koie Ryoji’s reputation extends beyond Japan. He has exposed his works in many renowned national and international venues.
