This ”spirit tablet” has the name of the man, Chun Fa from Lin Prefecture , and the name of the donor, the respectful wife Niang, born Song. A large, attractive and unique flower base or receptacle to be used for irises or orchids made of a partially carved piece of natural root wood. The top rim has been carved with undulating scroll-pattern, much of it in openwork. An interesting and somewhat unusual piece for the scholar’s table. Nice wear and patina. China, Qing, early to mid-19th cent. H 18 cm, W 30 cm. Condition: Fair, some cracks and minor losses.
