An heavy potted, yet elegantly subdued vase with a twelve faceted surface covered in a grey-green glaze with a whitish Mishima-style decoration and topped with a square, sturdy neck. Four of the sides are decorated with bamboo sprigs the others with a textile-like pattern, done in his usual way by impressing the pattern with the use of the rope. Signed in the bottom with impressed mark for Shimaoka Tatsuzo (1919 - 2007). He was designated as Living National Treasure by the Japanese Government in 1996. Shimaoka Tatsuzo was the primary student among Hamada Shoji’s followers in Mashiko. Fitted and fully signed kiri box and paper. H 23 cm, W 14 cm. Condition: Perfect.
