A very elegant and unusually decorated food box (jubako) in four parts. For the outside decoration three different lacquer techniques have been used. The ground in applied mother of pearl (aogai okigai), the fan design in hemp fibre lacquer (shuroke nuri), and the white, dominating zig-zag design in eggshell lacquer (tamago kara nuri). The inside of the boxes in plain, red lacquer. The individual boxes are signed with a workshop mark ‘Enoki hon.’ It comes with an old inscribed storage box/tomobako. Japan, mid-Edo, late 18th cent. H 26 cm, W 20 cm. Condition: Quite good, some wear and minor chips to corners due to age and use.
