A large and impressive sculpture depicting Daruma, ( Bodhidharma ) the Patriarch of Japanese Zen Buddhism. Stern but friendly expression.
Made of carved wood, paper, and gesso, lacquered and painted.
The dark red colour robe is richly decorated with dragons and stylised cloud. The eyes of decorated glass. Sitting in his Patriarchal pose on a chair (which is not original). Edo Period (1603 - 1868) most probably late 18th century. Size of the image: H 45 x W 27 x Deep 20 cm. Total size with chair: H 56 x W 31 x D 22 cm.
Condition: overall good, some area of wear to gesso and a thin dry crack on the lower part of the chest due to age.
