Votive image of the Gohonzon, the graphic representation of the Lotus Sutra as the enlightened reality in accordance with the tenets of the Nichiren School of Japanese Buddhism ( Namo moho renge kyo) . As such it features the names of all the primary deities in the Lotus Sutra in addition to the title of the scripture itself. The present piece is written in ink on heavy paper and mounted on a traditional paper scroll. It dates from the late Edo, more precisely from 1859 (Ansei 5). H 123 cm, W 45 cm in total (picture frame H.50 cm x W. 37 cm). Condition: Very good with only a few creases.
