An elegant hexagonal shape flower basket with a long handle.
Spotted bamboo , soot bamboo, rattan and lacquer.
Selected Techniques: Ajiro, twill plating technique = thin bamboo strips woven as to have a surface of diagonal parallel ridges.
Signed in the bottom.
It comes with original bamboo Otoshi vater container and fully inscribed tomobako.

Biography:
Watanabe Chikusei II was born in Beppu, Oita Pref. Kyushu in 1932, the second son of a traditional bamboo crafting family. From a young age he studied under his father, Watanabe Chikusei I, who was a highly respected master of Agiro plaiting technique ( twill plating) and in 1966 took the artist’s name Chikusei II,
succeeding his father as the family’s head bamboo artist.
In 1978 he won a prize at Nihon Dentou Kogei ten ( Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition).
In 1979 starts to collaborate with TIFFANY & CO. / JAPAN creating bamboo handbags and basket for the company.
Outside Japan his works are in the collection of:
Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
