A beautiful hand thrown stoneware vase of tapering shape with three very small ears; mottled blue glaze / rubbing eggs glaze creating a stunning effect made by Ito Tosan. Ito Tozan I (1846-1920) or Ito Tozan II (1871-1937). Seal mark underneath reading Tozan, enclosed in the original stamped cotton bag. It comes with a collector box from the 50´s. Late Meiji to Early Showa, 20th cent. H. 26, 5 x Diam 7,5 cm. Condition: Fine. **** Ito Tozan I (1846-1920) started his artistic career as a painter studying under Koizumi Togaku before moving to studying ceramics under Takahashi Dohachi and Kanzan Denshichi. He opened his own kiln in Eastern Kyoto in 1867. He worked very closely with his son in low **** Ito Tozan II (1871-1937) who also stated his career as a painter but was soon introduced and trained by Tozan I into the family business; he was an excellent and innovative potter highly appreciated both on the Japanese and the international market. Their works have been highly prized at home and at the World Expositions in Amsterdam, Paris and Chicago. The Tozan Lineage continued with his son Tozan III (1901-70) but eventually died out at his death in 1970.
