This is a contemporary Chinese Longquan celadon artwork mainly for decorative purpose. The artist Mr. Chen Xianlin cleverly used the dark stone clay and inserted into the main body to create the mould pattern. The pale celadon glaze was used after the first firing process. Thus created a very nice visual effect in terms of the color contrast.

When asked Mr. Chen Xianlin why not use the Chinese paint brush and black ink to create under-the-glaze effect, the answer from this Chinese Provincial Arts and Crafts Master was simple: “It is contemporary potting but painting.” He also invited the observers to check any broken lines on this vessel, which was the goal before the creation of this artwork.

It is difficult to mix the two different materials into one artwork. However the creativity applied to the vessel had changed the celadon ware in tradition. The contemporary celadon vessel mixes the great potting skill, creative design of its shape, jade-like visual effect and the innovation from Chen’s dark stone clay insertion.

The Contemporary Celadon Vessel is in perfect condition and Chen Xianlin’s signature on base with certificate signed and original packaging box form his workshop.

If Longquan celadon represents part of thousand years Chinese ceramics history, Mr. Chen Xianlin is the pioneer who turns the sleeping dragon to contemporary fashion with western modernity.

Born in 1964 and started his pottery study since teenage, Chen Xianlin pursued further in the Arts and Crafts Department of Nanjing Art College and graduated in 1980’s. He then joined Celadon Research Institute of Longquan and prompted to the director of Design Workshop in the Institute since 1987. In 1997 Chen Xianlin built his own workshop and kiln after his career in Celadon Research Institute of Longquan.

As a design artist of traditional Longquan celadon, Chen Xianlin not only familiar with the Ge Kiln and Di Kiln production process, his creativity and innovative approach to the potting material and design makes him the first person in contemporary Longquan celadon. In addition to typical crackled glazing or Guan Ware type of jade-like bluish presentation, the unique ‘insertion’ skill is widely used by Chen in his artwork design. Chen Xianlin inserts different clays in his artwork to create the visual effect that similar with crackle or Chinese brush-pen painting. Chen even uses pottery clay from Yixing (the home town of famous Chinese Zisha teapot) or other kinds to mix with celadon in his contemporary artwork. The result exhibits a modern sense of style with beautiful celadon visual effect in glazing.

In ancient China the celadon ware were used in royal court with bronze form or used in daily ware such as vase, bowl or plate etc. Chen Xianlin is the first and only artist so far who turns the traditional concept into decorative artwork. His artworks won him many awards as the contemporary Longquan celadon artist who deserves the title second to none.

As today Chen Xianlin is the Senior Arts and Crafts Master of Zhejiang Province in China.
