A very rare “mark and period” wucai dish dating to the late Ming period and the reign of the Emperor Tianqi decorated with the Chinese literati subject of the scholar Wang Xizhi standing beneath a Willow tree observing a flock of Geese in flight. Wang Zhi was a noted Chinese scholar and calligraphy master, known as the Sage of Calligraphy, who lived during the Jin Dynasty. It was said that by observing the manner in which the geese moved their heads proved the key to the way in which he manipulated his wrist to produce his famous cursive calligraphy. This class of porcelain is described in Japan as aka-e tenkei. The dish is in good condition with expected fritting characteristic of the period, no cracks or restoration. The reverse is decorated with peach motifs. Chattering within the foot-rim. A four character Tianqi mark within a double ring.
