An interesting pair of koi-gata o-zara, carp shaped dishes of unusual form dating from the second half of the 18th century, probably around the Meiwa era in the Edo period. Each dish has been realistically modelled and painted using shiranaku, resist techniques. The reverse is painted with a sketchily executed pattern of crested waves. The dishes follow precedents that date from the 17th century.
Each dish measures approximately 22.5cm, or 8.75 inches in length. The dishes are in good condition, except for some chips to the foot-rings, and some fritting and related chipping to the edges.
