A dish of raised barbed lotus form with a moulded ribbed cavetto decorated in underglaze blue with gilt outlined enamels dating to circa 1740-70. The unusual form of the dish follows Chinese “Ko Sometsuke” precedents of the first half of the 17th century; see “The Peony Pavillion” lot 220 for a Chinese example of the Chongzhen period. The centre of the dish divided into four semi-ogee reserves creating a cruciform motif with a squarish shaped central reserve. The reserves decorated with auspicious Shishi set against a green seeded Lotus ground, and scenes of a scholar by a hermits refuge set in a Temple Garden. The centre decorated with a partially obscured, dragon and clouds motif. The rim is decorated with a curious vegetative scroll motif painted in shiranaku style, partly gilded. The reverse is painted with a Chrysanthemum scroll and a six character Chenghua mark. Nearly identical dishes are illustrated in The Complete Catalogue of the Shibata Collection at page 414 No 3252, and there dated 1740-70 The dish measures approximately 21cm in diameter and is 3cm high at the rim. It is in good condition with no cracks, chips or restoration and some minor wear to the gilding and enamels. Shipping at Cost.
