A rare Chinese porcelain dish decorated with a pattern made specifically for the Javanese (Indonesian) market. The figures represent characters from the Waylang Kulit the traditional Javanese shadow theatre puppets, as can be from the curious anatomy of the upper arms. These grotesque figures often described as “clowns” were a popular part of the traditional theatre and were known as the panakawan or punakawan. The dish measures 9.75 inches or 24.8 cm in diameter and stands 2in or 5cm high. The foot-ring measures 5.25ins or 13cm in diameter. Dating probably late 18th or early 19th century. The dish is in good condition with no cracks, chips or restoration. Shipping at Cost
