A fine Kakiemon shallow dish of moulded octafoil form decorated in underglaze blue and enamels with a scene from the Tale of Ise featuring the famous eight planked zig zag bridge, Yatsuhashi, over a bed of Irises, kakitsuba. The Kakiemon version combines trailing Cherry blossom with clouds and rain. The lower half of the design incorporates further familiar Kakiemon elements, the almost trade mark, turbulent waves and a water fowl, amongst Irises. The dish dates to the late 17th century circa 1680-1700 and was produced at the Kakiemon kiln. The dish measures 22cm in diameter and is in excellent condition, except for a minute flake to the underside of the rim (see last image). The reverse is decorated with a cursive fuku mark in a double square and a continuous lotus scroll. Further images on request.
