An Arita porcelain small bowl with barbed lotus style lobed rim, a namasu, typically used in Japanese cuisine to serve various pickles. Potted in mid 17C transitional Chinese style without a foot-rim as such, but an unglazed ring, kodai. The interior of the bowl painted in ko-sometsuke style. One half painted with Su Shi’s “First Ode to the Red Cliffe”, divided into twelve columns reading from right to left. The stanza is not complete with several columns of characters missing at the end and the last column does not appear in the original version. The other half with a landscape, perhaps representing a view of the Yangtze river. The centre painted with an image of Su Shi in underglaze blue but over painted in iron red and gilding at the time of production with a Chrysanthemum motif, presumably to render the design more visually appealing. The reverse is decorated in underglaze blue and iron red and gilding with precious objects and an overlapping Chinese transitional lotus leaf/petal border pattern to the rim. This style of reverse is consistent with a Kyoho to Horeki period dating, circa 1730-60. The dish measures 14cm in diameter and stands approximately 5cm high and weighs 269gms. The glaze is quite thick and suffused with small bubbles with a pronounced bluish tone. The biscuit body is comparatively grey in colour, so probably a product of one of the Uchiyama kilns at Arita. Good condition, no cracks, chips or restoration. Worldwide shipping included in the US $ price and UK shipping included in the Sterling £ price.
