A medium sized bowl decorated in “Kinrande” style for the Japanese domestic market. These richly enamelled wares were patronised by the wealthy merchant class and tend to be decorated primarily with auspicious objects and patterns, kissho-ga which gives rise to the alternative description “katamono”, meaning literally standard objects. These wares imitate the richness of the Chinese kinrande wares of the Wanli era, hence the apocryphal six character mark to the base of the dish This particular dish is decorated with an iron red ground into which various motifs have been inserted and over-laid, flaming pearls or tama, auspicious clouds and ogee form reserves with stylised flowers. The rim is decorated with a cloud and vine border, and the well or mikomi of the bowl with a scene of contemplation in this example a Chinese or Temple garden with Rocks, symbols of longevity and Banana Plantain, Basho, often used as a symbol for the impermanence of life. The reverse is decorated with Dandelions, tanpopo, and further stylised flowers within circular reserves. These stylised flowers defy taxonomy and are probably intended to suggest a world beyond our own imagining, perhaps one of the Buddhist paradises. The base of the dish is decorated with a band of overlapping lotus petal leaves and a six character mark for the Ming Emperor Wanli within the foot-rim. The bowl dates to the Kyoho era of the Edo era circa 1715-1735. The bowl is in good condition with no cracks or restoration. However the is a small graze to the top rim, and some chipping to the very low foot-ring, probably due to the post firing removal of kiln grit. It measures approximately 16cm in diameter, 5.7cm in height. It weighs 346 grams.
