My pictures do not do justice to the elaborate, three-dimensional silver work under the translucent, dark, cherry red enamel. There are moths hidden among the flowers and leaves, and there is a depth to the design that you must admire in person to appreciate. As the sunlight skips over the delicate, gleaming petals of the most pronounced flowers, the rest of the intricately wrought design falls in varying degrees into the shadows.

In 1894 Chuji Fukagawa, a student of Makuzu Kozan, founded the Fukagawa (fuka = mountain, gawa = river) porcelain company. His idea was to gather the best artists in Japan to shape and paint porcelain for export to the rest of the world. He entered a large vase at the Paris International Exposition in 1900 and won the gold medal. Another gold medal was won at the World's Fair in St. Louis in 1904, and in 1910...

Fukagawa Landscape Vase on Hirado Blank (ca. 1910) (Scroll down for more information.)

The Fukagawa Company sometimes used Hirado blanks rather than their own Arita blanks. This vase is a beautiful example of that practice. In 1910 the Hirado factory was purchased by Fukagawa.

Edo Period Celadon Hirado Horse

A "rare" Hirado celadon (seiji) recumbent horse, extraordinary modelling, and a virtuosic example of the flawless green-glazed porcelain produced in the eighteenth century in northwestern Kyushu, Japan. Typically, the glaze was applied over a layer of white slip (liquid clay).
