This is a 19th Century, Dear Horn Antler Ryusa Manu Netsuke carved in a stylized blossom with five petals carrying a crest from a chapter of the Tale of Genji, sorrounded by waves, The other side is carved with an open-work blossom, within a five-point star, surrounded by waves. Typical work by the Asakusa School. Excellent detail on a one-piece, round, slightly domed manju, on a material that is very difficult to carve. unsigned. Netsuke measures 1.60 inches (4.0cm) in diameter, and 0.66 inches (1.7cm) thick. It is in excellent condition, as may be seen in the posted photos.

FAMILLE ROSE, Molded Enameled Porcelain over a Bronze-based Snuff Bottle, Jiaqing Mark, 1796-1820

This is a fine Famille Rose Figural Molded Porcelain over a bronze-based Snuff Bottle, of flattened Circular form with slopping shoulders, with a waited neck, a flat lip with a wide mouth, and raised feet with a concave base. The bottle following the same form characteristics of similar bottles made during the XVIII century. The body of the bottle crisply molded with colorful objects including the emblems of the Eight Daoist (Taoist) Immortals, such as: peach, fan, bamboo drum, rods of Zhang Guo, sword, double gourds, and the flute of Han Xianxi. There is a Jiaqing (1796-1820) seal script Mark in iron red letters to the base. It comes with an orange and ping coral stopper.

This lively and colorful bottle is in remarkable preserved condition.

This is a finely carved boxwood netsuke depicting the Skeleton of the Buddhist Priest Danka beating on a Mokugyo, or Buddhist Temple Drum. Very nice detail and wonderful symmetry all throughout, rich patina. It sports a chimney himotoshi that begins on the bottom of the mokugyo, and continues around the spine of the skeleton. This is an unsigned and larger version of this popular Japanese legend. Netsuke measures 1.28 inches (3.3cm) wide, 1.45 inches (3.6cm) long, and 1.75 inches (4.5cm) tall. It is in excellent preserved condition, as may be seen in the posted photos.

The solid form with peg himotôshi carved in sunken relief with a Karako holding a fan on his left hand and carrying on his right hand a tree branch divided into four sections that hold objects that depict the four working classes of Japan: Farmer, Merchant, Craftsman, and Samurai, as well as inlaid tortoise shell and coral beads. One of the hanging objets, the tablet with the inscription that reads: ‘Dai Fuku Cho” – Great Fortune Accounting Book-, depicts the Merchant class. Signed Kogyokusai, one of the pupils of Moritoshi Kosai, the founder of the Moritoshi School of Manju Carvers. It is of interest to note that all the manju netsuke carved by Moritoshi Kosai and his pupils were inlaid in mother-of-pearl, tortoise shell, or coral beads, just like this one. Information about the Moritoshi School of Carvers is found on page 801 or Lazarnick’s “Netsuke and Inro Artists, and How to Read their Signatures”.

This is a rare and rather unique Snuff Bottle made from Bamboo, and shaped in the form of a double Gourd. It has a flat footing. It is carved in high relief all around, and it depicts monks within a temple, surrounded by trees. A crane making a landing can also be seen. Well established cavity. Excellent rich patina. This is a finely hand-carved Ebony Netsuke attributed to Jikan Ganbun, depicting a Tree Stump. Nicely detailed rendering of a tree stump with its rough textured exterior contrasting with a smooth top and bottom that are styled in a star shaped manner. The concave stump is slightly hollowed out, with a smaller stump on its side. There is a tiny ant looking figure that has been carved inside the stump. Netsuke is unsigned. It measures 1.25 inches in diameter and 0.50 inch tall. Netsuke is in excellent condition, as may be seen in the posted photos. A similar netsuke was offered for sale as part of the Robert S. Huthart Collection of Iwami Netsuke: Part II, by Bonhams, London, on 06 November 2019, with an estimated value of $1,500 to $1,800. See photo #8, page 53 of Bonhams’ catalog.

This is a very fine, large, well-hallowed, Chalcedony Snuff Bottle of circular bulbous form, with a high neck, a flat wide lip, and an oval foot rim surrounding a shallowly recessed flat foot. The translucent stone has a random mottled pattern of brown and black spots, and a textured burst of white and cream colored pattern on one side of it , nears the bottom, over a grayish and light coffee colored stone ground. It comes with an orange agate stopper with a metal collar.

This outstanding looking bottle is in remarkable preserved condition.

This is a fine Famille Rose Figural Molded Porcelain Snuff Bottle, of Bulbous Rectangular with rounded shoulders, with a rounded neck decorated with a Leiwen border, a rounded form green lip, and a raised rounded rectangular base. The body of the bottle crisply molded with colorful 'Hundred Antiques' objects, such as: brush holder, seal, scrolls, peacock plumes, bronze mirror, dish of flowers, rare vase, brona wine pot, recumbent silkworms, palm leaf, scepter, coins, and others. There is an incised Guangxu (1874-1908) seal script Mark in fading iron red letters to the base. It comes with an orange coral stopper.

19th century finely hand-carved Japanese boxwood netsuke of a blind masseur or Totsuka Beggar crouching and trying to lift a stone, or possibly his hugely distended scrotum. He has the typical bump on his head. He squints as he attempts to lift the large object. He is wearing only a fundoshi. His right eye is inlaid with light colored horn. Excellent detail and patination. Netsuke measures 1.38 inches (3.5cm) wide, and 1.22 inches (3.1cm) tall. It is in excellent preserved condition, as may be seen in the posted photos.
