This is an original Antique (Pre-1900 / 1900) Gadget Cane, with an Ebony Ball with Coin Handle. The Coin is stamped with the frase "Docendo Discimus Exnihilo Nihil Fit" which translated means: "We learn by teaching. Out of nothing comes nothing.". As I understand, this type of coin used to be popular around the turn of the 19th/20th century.
It comes with an elaborately and exquisitely carved in a checkered/geometrical pattern shaft/scabbard that ends with a metal (nickle/silver) ferrule that is covered with a rubber piece. The wooden shaft consists of two parts: a five-inch top portion that comes with two nickel/silver collars on each end, and functions as a sword handle; and a 28.5 inches bottom portion that functions as a scabbard for the cylindrical steel blade. The blade measures 23.5 inches. The hollow (scabbard) shaft of the cane is as deep as the length of the blade, and it has a circular metal guide.
The Gadget cane, and all of its components (handle, blade, shaft, collars, ferrule), are in excellent condition, which is a great for an item that has been around more than 100 years.
