A large and finely sculptured, Japanese Meiji, figure of Buddha, shown seated on a high lotus base. Polychrome in the Kutani style. The raised hand in the vitarka mudra, meaning the gesture of argumentation (thumb and index forming the wheel of teachings). The left in the karana mudra, meaning the gesture of demon-defence. The flat base is textured. There is an opening, perhaps as a reliquary. It also offers the opportunity to see the hand moulded nature of this figure. Condition: One finger lost, restoration to left hand, good condition.
