A beautifully executed Modern Chinese color brush painting of a lively white bird with expressive eyes going after butterflies. Colophone, signature and seal of the well known artist Chen Pei Chiu, or Chen Pei Qiu (1922- ).
Scroll size 31 1/4 x 85", picture size 25 1/4 x 51", this is a large picture by Chen. Very good condition with no damage except a 2" short tear near top of picture not easily seen. From a New England estate.
Notes: A white bird on white paper is exceptionally difficult using ink brush strokes (which cannot be covered up).
Chen is one of the foremost modern Chinese painters of "bird and flower" themes. Of the southern school, she bridged the flowering of the great artists of the early 19-20th centuries, through WWII and the Cultural Revolution disasters. Her paintings appear regularly in the Hongkong sales of the 2 major auction houses, although few are as large as this one.
Interesting colophon roughly translates: "The parokeet came east some years. I fear it may fly home and trimmed the wings. I only let it out of the cage for feeding." This may be an allusion to Chen's own life as an artist.
