A lovely 1892 China trade oil painting portrait of the 3 masted clipper ship Woolton under full sail. It is by the Calcutta (India) Chinese port artist Lai Fong. Excellent details, including riggings and sail. You can even see the reefing lines on the sails. She is flying the red Britannia ensign and a house ensign topmost.
Launched 1885 May at the shipyard of Oswald, Mordaunt &
Co., for Sailing Ship Woolton Co. Ltd. (R.W. Leyland &
Co.), Liverpool. Assigned the official British Reg.
No. 91216. Sailed 1893 June 14 from Newcastle, NSW, for Valparaiso and disappeared on voyage. She was engaged primarily in the India Australia England trade route.
Approximately 28" by 22" vintage burlwood frame. Condition of the picture is quite good considering the age, with the characteristic crackalure of antique china trade oil on canvas. Quite a beautiful China Trade ships portrait in oil on canvas.
