The ovoid Pre-Columbian gold nose ornaments in this group (93.303CHD, 93.303DHD, 93.305BHD, MAX 72, 74, 76 and 79) are all from the Salinar culture of Peru dating c.400-200BC. Made from hammered sheet gold, each tests approximately 18K using calibrated needle and acids from a jeweler’s gold testing kit. The ornaments were then formed by stone-cutting them out of the relatively thin alloyed precious metal. The ornaments in this interesting group are similar, but none are identical. Here’s an opportunity to add an attractive piece of ancient gold jewelry to either a Pre-Columbian collection or a collection illustrating items of ancient adornment. Note also that any one of these eye-catching ornaments can be easily adapted by a competent goldsmith to be used as a pendant for contemporary wear. The previous owner, once a major Pre-Columbian art dealer who sold much of his inventory through major auction houses throughout the world, brought these into the U.S. in the mid-1970s. Each photo in this group of individually priced items has first the inventory number of the illustrated piece in brackets, followed by a description, then a quality grade in brackets. The next line includes the age, cultural horizon, and country of origin. Next comes the width of the ornament in millimeter size followed by its gram weight. A few notes about condition come next, and finally the price. Select or ask any question by referring first to the Trocadero Item Number on this page, and then our Inventory Number as shown on the given photograph. Any that have been sold will be so-marked on the appropriate photo. A purchase comes with small display card, a map highlighting the Salinar area in Peru, and our certificate guaranteeing authenticity to the original buyer.
