This is a very old lute called Sgra-snyan, it is made in a single piece of hard red wood with very elegant lines of carving; the upper part is carved in a circular shape ending as stylized horse head with a beautiful encrusted back patina. The sun is also carved on top of the horse head and on each side indicating strong animist influences. However the pegs have been lost and replaced recently by simple pieces of white wood, the strings. Few chips due to great age and use, probably around 100 years. This lute has been collected in the remote tibetan district of Dolpo, it is played by nomads and shepherds. Height 24 3/4.inches (62,5 cm). The piece is nicely mounted on a custom iron stand.
