This is an exceedingly rare calligraphy on hand-made paper by famous Kyoto artist Tokuriki Tomikichiro. He was best known for his prints, but was originally trained as a painter. It is delicately brushed on Japanese hand made paper (24.2 cm x 21 cm), a bit smaller than shikishi size, and much thinner. Two edges are deckled. It is inscribed “Close Friend” (知音). Signed: Tomi (富), red seal: Tomi (富). Date inscribed on the back in pencil: 94.11.30. Condition: minor handling creases, minor abrasions and discoloration, one area of staining along right edge, and one abrasion on the back.

Tokuriki Tomikichirō 徳力富吉郎 (1902-2000) was born into a long line of Kyoto painters, and while he did paint, he is best known for his woodblock prints, both Shin-hanga, which were major source of income, and Sōsaku-hanga, a major source of pleasure.
