A rare print by surrealist print maker Ozaku Seishi, professor emeritus from Tama Art University. He is best known for small edition prints, usually up to 30 copies, limitless experimentation with printing techniques and surrealist, often graphic imagery resembling distorted reality ¬neither quite explicit nor quite horror, but rendering a fairly dark version of dreams.
This aquatint is from a 1974 portfolio titled “World of Children” (子どもの世界), which consisted of 30 aquatints.
Print’s title is “Girl with Flame” (光に手をかざす). Image size is 12.2 cm × 17.5 cm, paper size 31.6 cm x 24.9 cm.
Blind seal at lower right corner bears the publisher and printer information: Osaka Formes Gallery and Printing Studio KEN. Signed in pencil, this is 9/30. Entire edition consisted of 30 numbered prints, 10 Artist Proofs and 5 HC prints.
Condition: minuscule handling creases, minor foxing stains.
Ozaku’s work is in permanent collections of the British Museum, Portland Art Museum, Honolulu Museum of Art, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, The Museum of Modern Art Kamakura & Hayama to name a few.
