A refined and elegant work of Hagi-ware done by a master potter who is not only a direct descent of the Hagi forebears, but who also credited with having revive the tradition when it fell out of practice. This piece features a well-formed kodai (foot), an exceptionally nice Hagi glaze and several “ishi-haze” or marks from small stones that partially explode in the kiln. Judging by the box and the signs of aging on the work itself, this appears to be an early work by this potter.

Sakakura Shinbei XII (1881-1960) studied under several well-known potters and tea masters including Saka Kouraizaemon IX, ikishō Sōshitsu (12th Iemoto of Urasenke), and was well acquainted with the likes of famed potter Miwa Kyusetsu the 10th. In 1955 he was designated an Intangible Cultural Asset of Yamaguchi Prefecture and was later nominated as a Living National Treasure. His works are held both domestically at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and in collections around the world.

In excellent condition, this piece is 5 inches in diameter (12.6 cm) and stands 3.5 inches (8.8 cm) tall. It bears Shinbei’s seal on the base and comes with a stamped and signed tomobako and an insert in Japanese detailing the artist and kiln. International shipping and insurance included in the price.
