A very interesting chawan (tea bowl) dating from the Korean Joseon period (Richo in Japanese; 1392-1897). This particular piece appears to date from the 16th/ 17th century and comes with a very old box which appears to have been furnished sometime in Edo. The light creamy crackled glaze is smooth in the hand and fine hairline fractures radiate along the sides of the bowl contrasting nicely with the gold repairs. Such pieces have long been favored by learned cha-jin (tea people) and are quite prized today as relatively few from this era have survived intact.
In fine antique condition with several gold repairs and hairline fractures, this piece is 6.6 inches in diameter (16.8 cm) and stands 1.7 inches tall (4.3 cm). Though this particular tea bowl is still functional and does not leak in any way, it appears more as an art object rather than a daily functional piece. The antique wood box it is stored in has the characters 高麗茶碗 (Korai Chawan) stenciled on the lid and on the side and the piece itself is wrapped in a custom silk pouch (shifuku). ** International shipping and insurance included in price.
