This exceptionally well-formed tea bowl displays highlights of flaxen and scarlet visible through a classic black glaze. Raku tea bowls such as this are made by hand, without the use of a potter's wheel. In the process of shaping the bowls, potters handle the tea bowls in much the same manner that users will hold them as they drink from them. In this manner, a connection is formed between the creator of the tea bowl and the participants in the tea ceremony. For this and other reasons, Raku bowls are a favorite of tea practitioners across Japan.

The artisan who crafted this tea bowl is Akazawa Seiho (b. 1948) of Okayama prefecture; a self-taught craftsman who, through dedication and years of study, came to be able to craft works such as this. Winner of several awards including the Tanabe Museum of Art Prize, Akazawa is known for adding his own flair to classic Raku motifs.

This piece is 5 inches in diameter (12cm) and stands 3.4 inches tall (8.5cm). It bears the artists seal next to the pedestal ring and comes with a signed wood tomobako. The bowl is in excellent condition and has a noticeable “hasami-no-ato,” or mark from the tongs that removed it from the kiln. This is desirable as it adds a certain unique flair to the piece. *** International shipping & insurance included.
