Elegantly balanced on a slenderly proportioned foot, this piece by Bizen native Kondo Masahiko displays a surprising level of skill for a potter still in the process of making a name for himself. With swirling ash glaze and a dazzling ceramic landscape, this piece is perfect for tea practitioners and collectors alike.

Born in Okayama prefecture in 1971, Kondo fashions his Bizen pieces in a traditional wood-fired kiln in the township of Ushimado. Especially competent with saké-ware and tea-ware, his pieces tend to have all the markings of traditional Bizen pottery but with a measured amount of modern flair. Winner of several awards including the Tanabe Museum grand prize for outstanding tea-ware and also a prize at the annual Japan Traditional Craft Fair, Kondo hopefully goes on to make a name for himself in coming years.

In perfect condition, this ceremonial tea bowl is inches in diameter () and stands inches tall (). Signed on the base, the piece comes housed in its original box signed and sealed by the artist. In addition, there is a protective silk cloth and an informational insert in Japanese detailing the artist and his kiln.
