A Japanese rare marine ivory vanitas with a toad on the back and a snake, incredibly sculpted in the smallest anatomical details. The memento mori theme is universal. In the West, remember that human life is precarious and that you must always be ready to die to reach salvation in heaven and eternal life. In Japan, human life is obviously equally precarious, but to reach Nirvana, the Buddha’s paradise, an endless series of deaths and rebirths had to be suffered. The skull is a symbol used to celebrate and show respect for people who have passed. Meiji Period second half 19th century Sizes: 5,5 x 5,5 x 3,5c m. Condition report: Good condition
