A Japanese lacquer suzuribako with makiè decoration and nashiji background depicting a scene from the poetic novel Ise Monogatari episode 23 “the well”.
The Inkstones have been made an abrasive stone, to facilitate the grinding of the solid ink (sumi) with water. The dissolved ink accumulates in the well of the inkwell and the calligrapher can control the ink density by adjusting the amount of water used.
Many suzuribako are richly decorated with maki-e lacquer and have a decorative function in addition to storing calligraphy objects.
