A Japanese lacquer suzuribako with makiè decoration and nashiji background depicting a scene from the poetic novel Ise Monogatari episode 23 “the well”. Many suzuribako are richly decorated with maki-e lacquer and have a decorative function in addition to storing calligraphy objects. Late edo period 19th century Sizes: 4,5 x 21 x 22 cm.
