A Japanese ivory okimono depicting a mighty tiger, in defense position with wide open jaws and mother-of-pearl eyes.
The whole body is engraved to simulate the streaks of the animal, the claws are in relief and in evidence as the whiskers and sharp and protruding teeth.
The sculpture takes up the iconography of the tiger taken from the parchments to hang and from the ancient screens.
Keisai 竟 齋 signature in relief within a rectangular reserve.
Meiji period late 19th century
Sizes: 6 × 12 × 4.5 cm.
