An early example of a Southern Official's Hat armchair, Shanxi province, likely 16th-17th C.
Dim.: WxDxH 58x42x58/102cm.
Elmwood with a thick black lacquer over a red lacquer (not textile). This red lacquer is of a type that is definitely before 1700.
The simple backrest is another indicator of it's age; later examples show more elaborate carved details.
Overall this chair has much in common with early chairs in the Co La Ma collection, as published by Curtis Evarts in his superb standard work on Shanxi furniture.
Condition: all aprons are original which is quite exceptional.
Strong wear to the lacquer, damaged spot at one end of the backrest's top rail, repair of a joint of one armrest, the side posts supporting the armrests in the middle have both been replaced, repairs to the edges of the seat's frame.
In general good and complete condition considering it's age.
Waxed, not re-lacquered.
