An ancient war shield from the Kenyah-Dayak people of Central Kalimantan (Borneo Island). The style of this shield with the tufts of human hair on the front is typical for an area known as Apo Kayan.
This is a very old example that has been in my private collection for 35 years and it is in all likelihood pre-1900.
The outlines of the monster heads and scrolling motifs are scratched into the wood, painted with natural pigments (red, black and white).
I believe the condition to be fair for it's age: there are multiple cracks to the wood that have been repaired with iron thread, a small piece of wood at the lower end is missing, there are losses to the tufts of hair and wear to the paint.
It is as found without any attempts to restore it.
