Entirely hand-modeled terracotta lion resting with crossed forepaws. The elongated body with vividly rendered mane, the tail runs between the legs to rest on the back.
The missing head reveals the buildup of the figure. Excellent modeling.
The collector’s label is covered by a second one referring to Fischer’s 1941 sale and reads B1404-234-pe ist).
The ink inscription is illegible and indicates, as with other pieces of the collector, where the figurine was found. The year of discovery was most likely 1868.

Enterely hand-modeled, excellent example of the buildup process. Head broken off, the forepaws chipped off.
Ex collection of Ernst Pfuhl (1876-1940), Basel, renowned classical archaeologist and art historian.
Thence Galerie Fischer Luzern, May 1941 sale, part of lot 234 (with copy of the catalogue entry).
Auction house owner Theodor Fischer gifts the piece to a friend in July 02, 1941 (copy of the accompanying note and list of objects joined).
The authenticity of the object is unconditionally guaranteed.
