Larger than usual kylix of Ionian shape showing a deep rounded bowl with high steep rim and slightly tilted handles attached on the belly. The trumpet-shaped foot with flattened resting surface.
The outside of the rim and the handle zone are reserved, as well as the small band inside the lip. No red lines inside.
The shape of the kylix originates from Eastern Greece and was widely exported and soon enough copied in Athens and elsewhere.
The present example may be a South Italian Greek colonial product, imitating Rhodian and Attic types of the first half of the 6th century BC. Many examples are known from Lucania and some show, as with our example, the light yellow ‘local’ clay noticed by Hayes.
For a related example, cf. item no. 4, pp. 6-7 in: John W. Hayes. Greek and Italian Black-Gloss Wares and Related Wares in the Royal Ontario Museum. Toronto 1984.
