A lustreless white 6 1/4 inch diameter plate decorated by the Smith Brothers with a view of the Santa Maria. The plate is inscribed “World’s Fair 1893" above the ship and “Santa Maria below the vessel. There are no other markings. The view of the ship is from the port of the bow.
According to Wilson and Spillman in volume 2 of “Mt Washington and Pairpoint Glass” and based on information from Carl Fauster, author of “Libbey Glass Since 1818,” the plate was manufactured by Mt. Washington Glass Company and decorated by Smith Brothers for Libbey Glass. The plates were sold by Libbey Glass at the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 when the on site glass factory at the exposition could not meet the demand for glass souvenirs.
