Once again Abe Anjin has lived up to our expectations in this Mount Fuji sake cup with his most sought after style of saishoku colors. It comes wrapped with the original stamped wrapping cloth enclosed in the original wooden box titled Saishoku Bizen Shuki and in turn enclosed in a black lacquered wooden box also stamped by the artist...

This very liquid form seems already imbibed with rice wine, the base stable while the sides tilt slightly, sagging on the stool, a superb work by Abe Anjin. It comes wrapped with the original stamped wrapping cloth enclosed in the original wooden box titled Bizen Shuki and in turn enclosed in a black lacquered wooden box also stamped by the artist. Obviously, he felt this was deserved of greatness...

This cups is reminiscent of a colorfully striped Nishijin-ori Kimono, blue red green and yellow on a base color of hemp. The rim rises and falls in a rhythmic dance aong the broad shoulder. Created by modern master Ajiki Jun, it comes enclosed in the original signed wooden boxes titled Shio-Yu Basara Guinomi. Basara is a term in Japanese aesthetics associated with the challenge of traditional ideals during the Muromachi period...

A superbly crafted trumpeting form by legendary Tamba artist Ichino Masahiko enclosed in a wooden box. The bowl reflects the aesthetics of those imported Korean wares preferred by Sen-no-Rikyu in the Momoyama era. It has a bold, strong foot which rests perfectly on the table, both grounding the bowl and yet allowing it a sense of flight, as if the moment will soon be gone (and it will indeed!)...

A spectacular large Chawan tea bowl by Udagawa Hosei enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled understatedly Hagi Chawan. The title is the only thing simple about this complex combination of contemporary clay, glaze, tradition, form, function, past and future. The white glazing has altered to soft blue and pink in the firing process, creating a feeling of opulence over the organic vessel...

An organic form covered in thick emerald glaze Higashida Shigemasa and enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Oribe Jikiro.  The eclectic shape is rendered roma block of clay, hollowed and torn, like the ragged crags of Gifu, home of this pottery tradition.  Natural textures to bring out the depths of the oribe green, and electric shimmers of blue rush over the edges evoking the sense of water on the move...

A singular design by Tsujimura Shiro enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled humbly Iga Chawan.  The lack of pretense in the title does not match the superlative nature of the bowl.  Shiseki protrude around a great eye of black fire, a dramatic whip of pale glaze swiping from the sagging rim.  The bowl is slightly elongated, the shape creating both a tension in the form and an engaging vocabulary to the palms of the holder, making it an easy bowl to drink from.  This is a superlati...

Kakurezaki Ryuichi is one of the most well known of Bizen potters, he is interestingly originally not from Bizen but far off Nagasaki, which seems to have gifted him with the ability to see the clays potential beyond conventional form. He graduated the Osaka University of Fine Arts, then enjoyed a long apprenticeship under Bizen Living National Treasure Isezaki Jun before opening his own kiln in 1986...

A wonderful tea bowl by important Mino artists Ando Hidetake enclosed in the original signed double wooden box titled Ko-mino (old) Chawan. The feldspathic glaze has been burnt and changed by contact with the flame, the crystallized surface varying in shades from yellow to pale green. This is a great example of the style of this artist who is known for radical textures and natural effects...

A rare Chawan tea bowl imprinted with her signature text from the Bible Series by modernist artist Araki Takao fired by Uchida Koichi enclosed in the original wooden box titled Seisho Hakuryu-yu Chawan signed by both artists.  The script raises pillar like up the side, wrapping around inside the bowl, and would be slowly revealed as the thick green tea was consumed in three sips.  The Bible Series is arguably one of her most important, and this piece is a very rare work bridging the Zen cultur...

A striking Bizen Chawan of mixed clay by Kakurezaki Ryuichi enclosed in the original signed wooden box and date to 2016. A similar Chawan including some others works from this Una Mistura series is now showing at the Miho Museum in Shiga prefecture.
